An important challenge to the successful implementation of Broadband-Integrated Services Digital Networks is that of designing adequate dimensioning methods for such networks. The difficulty is mainly related to the use of the Asynchronous Transfer Mode and to the evaluation of the statistical multiplexing gains, as calls do not require a fixed bandwidth and are transmitted on a variable bit-rate basis. In addition, the presence of a large number of traffic classes having very different statistical characteristics, bandwidths and service requirements, makes it very difficult to analyze overflow processes and evaluate individual call blocking probabilities. The complexity is finally increased by the use of various quality of service control procedures, both at the cell and call levels. In this paper, we address all these issues and present a complete dimensioning method for ATM networks.
