In this paper, we show the algorithmic aspects of a Òself-sizing networkÓ - a new network operation concept for ATM using the autonomous adjustment mechanism of virtual path (VP) bandwidth. We describe the framework of VP-bandwidth adjustment in a self-sizing network and propose simple algorithms for evaluating the VP bandwidth demand - the bandwidth needed to satisfy the quality of service objectives. The proposed algorithms use only a small number of assumptions or a very primitive traffic model so that they are applicable to a wide range of traffic characteristics. Our simulation results show that the joint utilization of VP-bandwidth-demand evaluation using buffer measurement and VP bandwidth adjustment based on the evaluation results achieves proper resource allocation to the VP.
