Tom's Midnight Garden Tom's Midnight Garden この作品は大学入試問題で知ったものです。ちょっと長かったり，難しい作品が続いたので，息抜きに，そして何かの縁だと思い読み始めましたが，ちょっとなめてかかりすぎました。字は大きいし，児童書だし。以前ナルニア物語や大草原の小さな家シリーズを読破したこともあったので，簡単に読めるだろうと思っていましたが，どうも引っかかります。ちょっと他にやることがあって読書が中断したこともあったのですが，最初の数章は結構苦労しました。３分の１ぐらい過ぎると，この物語の不思議な世界がぼんやりとわかってきて，心配なこともたくさん。最後の２章で，謎解きがあり，やっと落ち着きました。なかなかおもしろい本です。入試の英文はその物語のさわりの部分で，この物語におもしろさとはほとんど関係がありません。
短い文で，構文はまさしく受験英語。なのに読みにくく感じたのは何気ない単語（特に名詞）の意味がわからなかったり，イメージがつかみにくかったようです。受験英語頻出表現が１９５０年代の作品にいっぱい登場するとすると，やはり現在の構文集は少し過去の遺産を引きづりすぎかもしれません。

日本語の「ゲートル」ですね。以前，和英辞典で「足取り」という見出しにgaitがあって，そんな単語作文には必要ないだろうし，古すぎる，ということで，文句を言ったことがありましたが，こんなところに出てきました。次のwadersは「(胸または腰までの)長靴,胴長.」と１８００年代後半の日常生活を知る必要がありそうです。

「((やや古))広口の水差し《水道のない寝室の洗面用》」（ジーニアス大英和）ということで，これまた，当時の風俗を知る必要がありそう。

trapは「罠（わな）」かと思いきや「〔英史〕(2輪の)軽装馬車」というわけで当然知りませんでした。

このての倒置構文が頻出。特にこれは受験英語では頻出の構文。こんなところにありました。

「群衆」「人だかり」
as ifとas thoughの出現には以前から興味がありました。
そこで，この比較的短い物語（約５万５千語）にas ifとas thoughが同じように頻繁に出現しました。数えると総数６１（as
if (33) vs. as though (28))でas if とas thoughが拮抗しています。これまでの経験によるとas
if / as thoughは著者の好みで，as thoughしか使わない著者とas ifだけの著者にわかれるのが通例です。従って，as
if / as thoughについては意味の差異はない，という結論でした。（どの辞書もそう扱っています）

He felt a sickness in his stomach, as though he had eaten the wrong things at breakfast: perhaps he ought to go straight back upstairs to bed.

as if/thoughの次にくる時制，助動詞では同じように使われています。ただ，as if しか使われない場面。
The clock struck the present hour; but, as if to show its independence of mind, went on striking-Two!
Inside the tower, it was as black as if night had already descended: Tom felt that the darkness increased Hatty's anxiety for the homeward journey.
もありました。
いずれにしろ，この著者は明らかに何らかの基準があって使い分けていると考えられます。現在の作品ではそのような傾向がほとんどないのは確かだと思いますが…
