climate of the SAHARA desert



          Rainfall is an erratic and infrequent phenomenon; over three -

       fourths of the desert receives
receives less than 100mm per year.

       Several years can pass without any appreciable rainfall at all.
       
        The annual mean temperature ranges between 17°C- 30°C.

       Daytime temperature is 25°C- 55°C. The layer of soil on the bedrock is relatively thin, heat that soaks into it

       during the day is quickly lost at night. Thus nights are often very cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping to

       freezing. The lowest night time temperature recorded was -7
°C. The highest was recorded in Azizzia, Libya, at

       58°C. The hottest mopnths are June, July and August. In addition to the scorching heat,hot winds know as

       sirocco, khamsin, shahali and harmattan blow fircely, especially in the spring and fall; they can be dangerous and

       make life insufferable.
