Rainfall is an erratic and infrequent phenomenon; over three -
fourths of the desert receives receives less than 100mm per year.
Several years can pass without any appreciable rainfall at
all.
The annual mean temperature ranges between 17°C- 30°C.
Daytime temperature is 25°C- 55°C. The layer of soil on
the bedrock is relatively thin, heat that soaks into it
during the day is quickly lost at night. Thus nights are
often very cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping to
freezing. The lowest night time temperature recorded was -7°C. The highest was recorded in Azizzia, Libya, at
58°C. The hottest mopnths are June, July and August. In
addition to the scorching heat, hot winds know as
sirocco, khamsin, shahali and harmattan blow fircely, especially
in the spring and fall; they can be dangerous and
make life insufferable.
