This is the design of the Rongelap
Peace Museum. It will be a concrete building with a thatched Marshallese
style roof. It will consist of a main building and four wings. The
main building will be used for a hall where Rongelap victims will
speak of their sufferings, an administrative office, storage, etc.
The four wings symbolizes four atolls victimized to US nuclear tests,
Bikini, Enewetok, Rongelap and Utlik Atolls.

INTERNATIONAL
APPEAL FOR SUPPORT OF THE RONGELAP PEACE MUSEUM
Nearly half a century has passed since the Bravo Hydrogen bomb test was
conducted on March 1, 1954. The cleanup of the Rongelap Island, Rongelap
Atoll that we have longed for is gearing up for the resettlement of the
islanders.
For the first time in 25 years since I was last on Rongelap Atoll in 1975
had the opportunity to visit. Was very happy and excited to set foot on
my homeland, but suddenely I was overwhelmed with emotions.
I was very sad because there is no one to cherish and enjoy the long
beautiful beach and azure lagoon. I don't see children playing and running
after the animals. But I can only see houses as was 25 years ago except
empty and fainted. Seeing the cemetery could only make me picture the
pains and sufferings of the innocent people. How sad it is to lose lives
and to be victimized by this horrendous nuclear weapon. But with a little
bit of hope it came to me, a DREAM. A dream to have a museum built. The
victims should be remembered and we all should learn from their pains
and sufferings. The museum will not only be a show case of the experiences
of the victims and the events, but it will be a center for exchange programs
between Rongelapese and Japanese Hibakusha (nuclear victims) and their
common goal that is PEACE. We should continue to be united as we fight
for abolition of nuclear weapons all over the world. It is only then we
will have a safe and peaceful tomorrow for our children and children to
come.
A dream is only a dream unless we do something about it. Your help and
support is very much in need. Therefore I come to you, asking you to bring
this dream into a reality. Please help. We are going to complete and open
the Rongelap Peace Museum on March 01, 2004 commemorating the 50th year
of the 'Bravo Shot' on Bikini Atoll.
We call for your support for the establishment of the museum so that it
will encourage the Rongelap islanders to move forward in rebuilding their
lives and to overcome difficulties, and will be a milestone of solidarity
between Rongelap sufferers and those of other atolls, and nuclear victims
of Japan and the world.
