Saito, H., Performance Characteristics of QoS routing in PNNI ATM networks, GLOBEOCOM'97 (1997).
This paper investigates fundamental performance characteristics for QoS routing. QoS routing tries to find a route that satisfies multiple constraints, called metrics and attributes. This paper considers single-criterion routings and compares the performance of the QoS routing with them by theory and by Monte Carlo simulation. This paper clarifies: QoS routing becomes more effective as the network becomes larger; QoS routing is effective when the normalized metrics have similar averages and large variances; routing via cost function using weighted sum of metrics performs poorly unless the weight is elaborately designed using the statistics of metrics. A single criterion routing better than the single criterion routing with weighted sum of metrics is proposed.
