This paper proposes ÒSelf-sizing Network Operations,Ó a traffic engineering and operation concept in ATM networks. Emphases on traffic management (Step 1) in this concept and its implementation, which uses VP functions in ATM networks. It realizes rapid and flexible resource assignment to each point-to-point traffic demand rather than unflexible resource dimensioning based on forecasted demand, and it removes micro-scopic dimensioning such as dimensioning of trunk circuits at each point-to-point in conventional networks as much as possible. It is implemented based on TMN (Telecommunication Management Network). MOs are derived to customize algorithms and reuse/share common functions needed by varieties of algorithms.
