Recently high speed data communication, such as inter LAN communication, is growing rapidly and spreading widely. ATM technology is expected to provide such a network universally and economically. However, to achieve there capability, there are still some problems. The traffic characteristics of high speed data communication are quite bursty and unpredictable. Therefore it is impossible to expect users to declare their exact traffic parameter. Yet it is expected to the network that should be managed efficiently due to handling bursty traffic. We propose a new ATM based high speed data communication network architecture that can benefit from statistical multiplexing of unpredictable and bursty traffic. The resource management method, proposed in this paper, consists of two parts, call admission control and congestion control. For the call admission control, the network doesnŐt reserve bandwidth call-by-call using userŐs traffic descriptor but instead manages resources by an aggregated cell stream of all calls connected in the same virtual path (VP) using the measurement of the aggregated cell stream in the VP. It is also proposed that the congestion control method which can enhance the network efficiency maintaining userŐs acceptable quality of service. Finally, a simple ATM-PVC network for high speed data communication using proposed resource management method is discussed.
