We propose a dimension method for a virtual path connection (VPC) in an ATM network, by using techniques of the Self-sizing. The method designs VPC bandwidth for multimedia traffic enough to satisfy required quality of services. In order to fit bandwidth to traffic demands, our method has three main features: (1) a measurement-driven algorithm on traffic and quality data, (2) a simple design formula without an assumption about traffic characteristics, and (3) error recovery by a cyclic repetition of (1) and (2). By using the method, we can allocate bandwidth to VPC which directly depends on traffic demands, and use network resources efficiently and introduce various services smoothly.
