This paper describes new traffic technologies in-B-ISDN called "Measurement-Driven Traffic Technologies". Existing traffic technologies use various assumptions about traffic characteristics, estimate performance based on them, and achieve traffic control and dimensioning. Using existing technologies, however, it is impossible to perform traffic measurement that can describe traffic characteristics completely for the foreseeable variety of traffic characteristics and it is questionable to make assumptions about unknown traffic. This paper proposes measurement-driven traffic technologies to control and design networks based on ordinary traffic measurement items, making as few assumptions as possible. In particular, it describes the relationship between the number of cells and the cell loss ratio, Bayesian performance estimation based on monitored performance, and ways to reduce the control cycle.
