スペンサーシリーズ２１作目．この作品の表紙は見覚えがあります．ハードカバーで出版された頃，Book-of-the-month
Clubというにのに入っていました．まだインターネットが一般的でなかったので，田舎で本の情報を得，購入するにはちょっと便利でした．年に３冊ハードカバーを購入する義務があり，毎月カタログが送られてきました．そのカタログにのっていたのがこの本．表紙から「ちょっと読みたくないな」という印象でした．stalkerという言葉が日本で一般化する時期と前後していたので，私はてっきりstalkerはこの本が発祥かと思っていました．
展開はPaperdollとよく似ており，物語の大半は冒頭に起きた殺人事件を地道に追って行くことになります．ただし，いったい誰の成長を助けるのかは，最後まではっきりしません．文中に登場する次のスペンサーの言葉がこの作品の特徴を取らえている気がします．

この進句（ミサのある部分に飾りとして入れた(詩)句）は復活祭の入祭文の一部であった．問と答えが2部で歌われる．進句は最終的にはミサから時課の礼拝（定時の祈り）特に朝課（夜明けの祈り）へと移動された．サンガル（スイス北東部の州）の修道院で発見された１０世紀の原稿から，「中世およびチューダー朝の劇」で復刻した．
問【天使】汝らは墓で誰を探すのか．キリストの信者たちよ．
答【マリア】ナザレのイエス．予言どおりに十字架にかけられた人．

prick masterは明らかに造語．この本の主人公は誰なのかさっぱりわかりませんでしたが，結局絞れば，この発言の主のJocelynともと辣腕警部のDeSpainとなりそうです．ところがtrick masterも造語に近そうでweb検索でも６６０件しかヒットせず，それも日本語ページのスケボー関連に目立ちました．こちらも造語か？内容はprick「《卑》 ペニス」（リーダーズ）から推測することになりそうです．

材料：チキン１．５キロ〜2キロ 小麦粉カップ１／３
塩：小匙１杯 ショウ：１／２ 乾燥タイムの葉：１／２
粉末唐辛子：１／８ 植物油：大さじ３ 玉ねぎ中２個，みじん切り
赤みのスモークハム１４０グラム（角切り）（オプション） 鶏がらスープ：４カップ
皮むきトマト缶：１（汁を捨て，４つ切り） Green bell pepper（ピーマン？）１，４つ切り
ゲッケイジュの葉：１枚 さやを取ったライマメ：２カップ，もしくは冷凍１パック
トモロロコシ：２カップ（生か冷凍）
チキンは１０切れに切り分ける（足２，腿２，手羽先２，胸肉４）脂身はできるだけ取り除く．水で洗い，水きりをする．浅いボールで小麦粉，塩，コショウ，タイム，粉末唐辛子を混ぜる．鶏肉をそれにまぶす．
大きな鍋で，中火で油大さじ２を熱する．鶏肉が湿っているようなら，もう一度まぶし，余分な衣はボールに戻す．
鶏肉を並べて鍋に入れる．（くっつけない）（必要なら何回かにわけて）色が変わるまで７分ぐらい焼く．油が焦げ付かないように半分ぐらいで火を弱める．鶏肉を取りだし，油を加え強火に玉ねぎを加える．中火で柔らかくなるまで三分ほどかき混ぜながら炒める．ハムを加え，こげ茶色になるまでさらに三分ほど炒める．残った小麦粉を振り入れ３０秒から４５混ぜる．
鶏がらスープを半分入れる．沸騰させてからアクを取り除く．沸騰させて水を減らす．鶏肉を入れた蒸し焼き鍋に全てを加える．トマト，残りのスープ，ピーマン，ゲッケイジュを加え，沸騰させる．中火にし，ふたをすこしして，１５分ほど煮込む．ライマメ，トウモロコシを加え，ふたをしないで，鶏肉と野菜が柔らかくなるまでさらに１０分から１２分ほど煮込む．アクを取り除く．ゲッケイジュを取り除き，塩コショウで味を調える．

Hawk went to the refrigerator, which was next to the table saw, and opened it and took out two long-neck bottles of Rolling Rock.
There was something antediluvian in the spectral progress from the sea to the shore and into the darkness that all three of us must have felt though none of us spoke of it.
