Prayers for Rain by Dennis Lehane, 1999
Dennis Lehaneの５作目、Sacredを抜かしたので、私自身は４冊目。なんか，作者がかわったくらい英語が素直になり，固有名詞も激減した感じ．今回はボストンの南のBog（沼地）へと何回かいきました．日本語タイトルは「雨に祈りを」．これは日本語タイトルとしては結構だし，こうするしかない，とも考えられますが，原文での登場は
She turned her head toward me. "Aren't they the same thing? Wishing to be saved? In this world, yeah? It's ..."
Her small face grew bitter and gray and she shook her head several times.
"It's what?" I said.
She looked at me like I was a child who'd asked why fire burns or seasons change.
"Well, it's like praying for rain, isn't it, Mr. Kenzie?"
She raised her hands to the clear, white sky. "Praying for rain in the middle of a desert."

「雨に祈りを」を「星に祈りを」を想起させますが，こちらは，Wish upon a star．文字通り星に願掛けをしていますが，Prayers
for rainは「雨を求めるお祈り」それも「かなわぬ願いを求める」といった感じのようです．
She read John Grisham novels, listened to soft rock, loved going to bridal showers, and had never seen a Spike Lee movie.
最初の犠牲者で，物語全体を支配したKaren Nicholsの横顔を紹介した場面．
一時期好きでGrisham作品を読んだことがあったので，「グリシャムを読み，ソフト・ロックを聞き，bridal shower(結婚する女性をその女友だちが祝福するパーティー)に行き，Spike Leeの映画は見たことがない」
これが「典型的なお嬢さんタイプ」となりそう．Spike Leeの代表作はMalcolm Xで，公民権，黒人運動がテーマ．「そうなんだ」と納得．グリシャムはお嬢さんですか？そういえば，純粋な志を持つ新米弁護士が老練な弁護士は巨悪を倒す，という勧善懲悪型の物語だったような．
Along the way, he'd pick up a few cases of Heineken and several bottles of Bacardi, because in addition to having the world's smallest brain, Tony T seemed determined to have the world's hardest liver, and then he'd hunker down in the cabin and watch cartoons on Nickelodeon until someone came to get him. （途中，彼は何ケースかのハイネッケンと何本かのバカーディを買うだろう．というのもトニーは世界一ちっぽけな頭脳に加えて，世界一強力な肝臓を持とうとしているようだから．そこで小屋の中でしゃがみこんで，誰かが迎えにくるまでNickelodeonの漫画をみているだろう．）
Bacardiはホワイト・ラム．Nickelodeonは放送局の名前のようです．漫画専門チャンネルか？

Murgaroidはテレビ番組の宇宙船の名前のようです．
Heavens to …はHeavens to Betsy（驚いた！）を想起させます． Heavens to MurgaroidはThee Headcoatsという（イギリスの）バンドのアルバムのタイトルのようです．Punk
Rockのよう．このアルバムタイトルと，「びっくり」という古めかしい表現をかけているようです．

favor-a light cashmere vest over a spanking new white T-shirt, Ralph Lauren

I had no problem with

either of them, but I sat in a position so I wouldn't have to look at the
Warhol. I think Warhol is to art what Rush is to rock music, which is to say, I
think he sucks.

misogynistは「度女性嫌悪(症),
女嫌い」以前，駄洒落好きの同僚が，「人間３０になると，女を嫌いになるんだ．そういう人のこと三十路ニストという．証拠に英語でもmisogynistと言う．」と教えてくれました．面白い話ではあったのですが，英文で出会うことはなかったので，感激．

おそらくボストン下町の発音を真似しているのだと思われますが…

前の映画の続きです．huffing and puffingとはなんとなく想像できるような．８０年代のシンセロックってなんでしょうか？

さすがのLehaneもアジアにはうといようで，禅，孔子，皇帝という関係のない３者が並んでいます．
