不覚にも知りませんでしたが，大変有名な話でした．スコット，アムンゼンは何回か読んだこともあったのですが…というわけで，Endurance号の関する専門ページも一杯．南極の様子もわかったり，こういう時はインターネットって本当に便利だね，と思います．

などたくさんありました．
この本は最後の１ページを読むために，延々と寒さと飢えと，渇きと，不快さ（ジメジメ，お風呂に入らず，髪は伸び放題，窮屈）に絶える物語．簡単な地図が付されていますが，インターネットで検索したり，エンカルタの地図を見たりしながら，南極の海を一緒に漂流しました．しかし，冬読むと本当に寒くてつらいです．
船の構造がわからないので，いったい今船はどういう状態なのかわからないことも多々ありました．
しかし，最後に泣けます．この感動のために（わかっているのに！）最後まで読み通すことです．
語り口が淡々としているのに感動的です．
"A skua gull appeared," wrote Macklin. "He settled down on our refuse pit-entrails of seals, etc.-and gorged himself to his hearts content-lucky gull."

【要旨】
語源は北米インディアンのアブナキ族（メイン州，ケベックあたり）のpemikanとクリー族（カナダの先住民）のpimikanから派生．元は脊髄の獣脂を取り出す行為を指したが，後に取り出されたものを意味するようになる．その起源は古くて不明．一つは肉を太陽，風，火などで乾燥すれば保存できるとわかったこと．腸(intestine)や嚢(bladder)で保存すれば脂肪分(fat, suet, marrow grease, tallow)が保存できることがわかったことが大きい．pemmicanの製法はアメリカインディアンから得られた．Mackenzieが１７９３年に北米大陸を横断したときの主食となる．
乾燥肉がたんぱく質を，乾燥果実がビタミンを，油脂がエネルギー源となる．ペミカンが毛皮猟師の主食となる．pemmicanの材料はバイソン，ムース，ヘラジカ，鹿など．赤み肉のスライスを乾燥，粉末状にし，野性の実を加える．溶かした脂肪分を加える．スープ，シチュー，ブロス（肉，魚，野菜などを煮出したスープ）として食べる．
Sweet pemmicanは上肉と脊髄の獣脂だけを用いた高級品で，何年も保存可能．なかには４年たっても品質が落ちなかったという記録もあり．
pemmicanでは１日３．６キロから４．５キロ必要なところを０．７キロから０．９キロのペリカンで同じ栄養があった．Hudson’s Bay company（ペリカンの製造・販売業者）のpemmicanは乾燥肉と脂肪分が１対１．
人間用pemmicanは雌のバイソン，子牛の赤肉から作られた．年寄りのbull（闘牛）は肉が硬いので，ドッグフードあるいは非常時に限られた．火にかけると，肉汁が出て，やわらかくなり，食べられるようになる．

The Caird was fitted with two masts
for a main and a mizzen sail, plus a small jib in the bow. The Docker carried a single lug sail,
and the Wills mounted only a very small mainsail and jib.
船の部分は大変わかりにくくて，イメージもつかめず苦労しました．辞書にも図などがあるのですが…
母船から離れた３艘の船の名前．寄付した人の人物名から取ったもの．

McLeod started it all by removing the sennegrass
insulation from his boots, then filling his pipe with it.
webで検索しても，シャックルトンに関するページがヒットするだけという珍しい単語．ブーツの絶縁用の草だと思うのですが，出ていない．これをタバコにしたのはかなり強烈のようで，そんなページもありました．
