The White Lioness by Henning Mankell, 1993The White Lioness by Henning Mankell, 1993ヘニング・マンケルの第３作。邦訳は第２作目までで，第２作の「リガの犬たち」がこのミス2004の１９位に入っていましたので，第３作が邦訳されればさらに上位にくい込むことが可能でしょう。シリーズ物を最初から読むとわかりますが，最初はページ数も限られているのだとおもいます。それが人気が出て，ある程度の地位になると作者の意向がかなり反映されて書きたいだけ書けるようになり，そのため作品が長くなります。今回の作品は大変長くミステリーに分類すると長さだけで上位に入ります。ただ，ミステリとしてでなく冒険物だということになるとそれほどではありません。最初はいつもの刑事物のように始まりますが，中盤からはフレデリック・フォーサイスを思い出しました。フォーサイスの作品だと思えば，十分に楽しめます。ただ，重要人物だと思っていた人が途中で死んでしまって新たな人物が登場というパターンが続くので，なんか中途半端。それに後半のWallander警部の行動も不可解。普通なら懲戒免職になっても仕方ないような行動を繰り返しながら，最後は全く穏便に済まされてしまうのも納得がいきません。
それほど好きになったように見えなかった第２作に登場したバイパに電話したり，手紙を書こうというのも不自然。前妻の話は全く出ませんが，娘は重要人物。第１作ではボケかかってほおっておけなかった父親は落ち着いて，若返った感じ。この大作でWallanderが何をしたかというと今ひとつはっきりしません。
