Stone Kiss by Faye KellermanStone Kiss by Faye Kellermanタイム誌で紹介された小説の３冊目。こちらの心理的な状態がよくなかったためもあり，２００ページほど読んで挫折することにしました。
こうした小説は一気に読むべきなのですが，いろいろなことがあって断続的であったこと。これはDecker/ Rina Lazarusという夫婦の夫がL.A市警，妻はよく知りません。夫婦の探偵小説のシリーズのよう。その１０作目ぐらいの作品。かつ，今回はDeckerも含むユダヤ教徒の一族の話。Deckerの親戚が殺害され，その被害者の姪が失そう。２００ページ読み終わったところでもほとんど進展なし。重要な役割を果たしそうなDonattiは以前の事件でDeckerやRinaと関係があったよう。シリーズものの途中から読み始めるのはやはり大変。
なぜ，この小説がタイム誌の旅行ミステリとして紹介されたかというと，Decker/ Rinaはもともとロスが舞台。今回は義理の兄（弟）（Deckerの一族もかなり複雑，腹違いの兄弟とか，養子になったとか，きちんとメモでもとっておかないと理解できない状態）に請われて姪の失踪を調べることになっており，観光気分の家族を従えてのニューヨーク滞在。（２００ページの段階でも「明日は妻の両親に会いにフロリダへ」と言っています。）ニューヨーク，マンハッタン島が舞台になっています。数年前にごく短期の旅行をしたので，地図を見ながら，読めば楽しかったと思いますが，どうにもいろいろなじめずに４０％読んだところで挫折します。
最近は途中であきらめることはほとんどないので，大変残念です。

読書再会。当分読む本がないので再開しました。今度はちょっと背景知識を得ることにしました。話そのものはどうということもなかったのですが，ユダヤ教やら，物語の背景などがないと苦しいかも。

というわけで，第１作から物語は連続しており，その背景知識がないとなかなか読みにくいです。

昔，チェリオという飲み物があったので，それだと思いましたが，チェリオは日本製の飲料でしたね。アメリカで生活していれば，ごく当たり前の食品でした。
Atop their heads were large black yarmulkes. The three sisters wore somber-colored skirts and blouses also torn near the collar. Two of the three women had on wigs; Raisie had elected to wear a scarf.
ヤムルカ，この小説では，義理の兄（弟？）がユダヤ教の司祭であることもあり，ユダヤ教徒の描写が頻発します。
"At the hespid yesterday, I spoke to people who worked with Ephraim. I also spoke with others who knew your son. Ephraim seemed like a man who was full of heart."
弔辞か説教のようです。（ユダヤ教の葬式などで？）
Or maybe he was reading too much into the camaraderie. Maybe they both wanted to get away from the crowd-which was certainly understandable.
Decker could see that others wanted to draw close to Mr. Lieber, to participate in the mitzvah of comforting the mourner -menachem avel.
直前に説明のある「会葬者を慰める」人のようです。
The place was as small as a kiosk, crammed with a half-dozen linoleum-topped tables and chairs with cracked Naugahyde cushions.

ケメルマン Harry Kemelman (1908- ) 《米国のミステリー作家; 作品にはユダヤ人のラビ David Small＿ を主人公にした Friday the Rabbi Slept Late (1965), Thursday the Rabbi Walked Out (1978) などのシリーズや大学教授 Nicky Welt を主人公とする安楽椅子探偵ものの短篇集 The Nine-Mile Walk (1967) がある》（リーダーズ＋）有名な作家のようですね。

あの三菱ということで，ひいてみました。パジェロのことですか？
