the Merchant of Menace by Jill Churchill the Merchant of Menace by Jill Churchill この作品はJill Churchill１０作目のようです。実は，他にも読みたい本があったので，とりあえず１作目だけ読んで，それから一気にとんで，９９年のこの作品にきました。どうしてこの作品にしたのか覚えていません。邦題を見ようとしたら，邦訳は「エンドウと平和」で止まったまま。（これって人気ないということでしょうか？）邦題と原題を比べるのが楽しいのに残念です。１から８年もとんでいますが，物語の時間の進行は極めて遅いようです。３人の子どもたちは少しずつ成長しているようですが，まだ，親のすねかじり状態。恋人であろうMel VanDyneとの関係も第１作から対して変化していないし，お隣の親友Shellyも相変わらず。あたかも小説の中では時間が止まっているようです。第１作が隣での殺人事件，１０作が向かいの家での殺人事件。この間にも隣近所で殺人事件があったとすれば，なんという血なまぐさい地区なんでしょう。そんな殺人事件とは無関係に日常生活が進行していきます。このシリーズは殺人事件は主ではなく，主婦の日常が主のような気がします。今回も嫁，姑問題とか，近所付き合いとか，２日連続するpartyとか，そちらを楽しんで読んで，あまり殺人事件については考えないほうがよさそうです。
邦訳の予定があるのかどうか知りませんが，タイトルはなんとつけるんでしょうか？直訳ならば「脅威の商人」とでもなって，（英）とありますが，「脅して商売する人」とか「脅威を売る商売人」ということで，タイトルと内容はしっかりリンクしますが，それでは，「ベニス」が生きないので，「蔑視の商人」「ニュースの商人」とかう〜ん，難しいです。
さて，1999年出版ということで，Windows 98も発表になっており，コンピュータが一般的な道具としてかなり認知されている時代です。Jill
Churchillもそれに遅れないようにComputerに重要な役割を持たせようとしていますが，これがかなり不自然。コンピュータ音痴の読者が読む分にはどうということはないでしょうが，「それはないだろう！」の連続。ちょっとひいてしまいます。

造語のようですが，curbは「縁石」（ふちいし），hugは「〜の近くを通る」直後の説明からも，「道路のはじすれすれを（車で）行く」ということで，Mikeの運転はかなりあやしかったんでしょうか？

grouseは「ライチョウ」のようで，ライチョウのように鳴く→「不平を言う」，ちょっとピンときません。

effusive「あふれんばかりの」はよくみる単語。その副詞形で「おおげさに」
よく見る単語だと思いましが，念のために調べると私のコーパスでは，１３件で，そのうち５件がJill Churchillの作品から，ということで，Jill churchillが特に好む単語のようです。
"If I don't have my
lists, I just sit in a stupor, wondering what I'm supposed to be doing,"
「ボーっとして」 これも知らなければいけない単語でした。

「二重螺旋(らせん)」 そんな難しい表現？ 文脈がないと全くわかりませんね。これは長男のMikeが大学へ入学したのですが，大学の授業がつまらなくて，成績もイマイチ（高校時代はStraight Aの優等生？）その友人の一人はDNAに夢中で，彼みたいにdouble helixesについて夢中になって話してみたい，といった文脈でした。このMikeをやる気にさせる場面は教育的で，何かに使えそうです。
