still of the nightという作品を読んだことがあるのですが，これが本当にアガサクリスティーしていたびっくり。今回は朝日新聞の日曜版で料理の先生というかたが推薦していた作品。題名が名作のもじりということで，なかなか楽しそう。ずいぶん前に購入していましたが，Ian
Rankinばかり読んでいたので，ここらで息抜きにアメリカものを読むことにしました。字が大きくて英語が易しくて，Ian
Rankinの最近の作品は字が小さくて，英文が難しくて難儀していたので，格好の息抜きになりました。
Jill ChurchillのJane Jeferyシリーズは結構評判がよいようで，ずいぶんの作品が出ています。どれも名作のもじりのようですぐに類推できるものものものあります。
Grime and Punishment→ Crime and Punishmen

しかし，簡単に推測できない作品もありました。
A quich before dying → A kiss before dying 「赤い崖／死の接吻
A knife to rembmer → A Time to Remember「J.F.ケネディを救え」
Fear of Frying → Fear of Flying「飛ぶのが怖い」
A groom with a view → A room with a view「眺めのいい部屋」
さて，この作品は「ゴミと罰」Grimeは"dirt which gets into your skin and clothes, or which gathers on buildings over a period of several years."とあり，ゴミというよりは「さんにたまったほこり，チリ」といった感じ。これは殺される家政婦が「さんまできれいにするのか」といった仕事振りに言及していることと，一見なんの問題もなさそうな主婦にもgrimeがある，といった掛詞のようので，読み終わってから考えるとなかなか味わいの深いタイトルでした。しかし，邦訳は「罪と罰」にあわせなければなりませんから，これはこれで止む得ないと思います。
さて，Jill ChurchillのミステリーはCozy mysteryと言うそうな。まぁ，ランキンのような暗くておどろおどろしいミステリの対極にあるような作品。主婦の会話についていくのは中年親父には大変です。

受験英語必須の表現ですが，Jill Churchillはこの表現がお好き。なんと１２回も登場しました。こんなによく使う作家は私のcorpusの中にはいません！

これも受験英語必須の相関語句。通例，比較級の「慣用表現」に載っています。その時は勉強しますが，なにせ実際の英文ではあまり出会わないのですぐに忘れてしまいます。

これも何気ない情景。ポテトサラダをこぼしてしまったので，それを拾っているところです。apatulaが「へら」のことのようで，サラダのボテっとした固まりをglobというようです。

「人に〜してもらう」という語法は have +人+doというように教えます。最近ではdoのかわりにdoingも良いとされますが，ほとんどそういった形で扱わないので，このような英文に出会うと戸惑ってしまいます。この作品は１０年以上前のもの。複雑な気分…
